Building a new OCD treatment app: from launch to recognition and venture funding

We designed and built the first publicly available version of NOCD — a revolutionary digital tool in the mental health space that helps patients record objective data in between their regularly scheduled sessions with their therapists. As a result, NOCD has been ranked as a top mental health treatment platform and raised $17m in venture funding.

Challenge

The barriers to understanding a complicated health topic like OCD treatment and a new set of digital tools for exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy made for a difficult user experience in NOCD’s first MVP prototype. Many users would drop before seeing any improvement.

Solution

Through extensive UX research with therapists and patients, we overhauled the app’s visual design and user experience across all touchpoints. We specifically enhanced onboarding in order to immediately demonstrate the app’s newfound intuitiveness and benefit.

ERP treatments

Challenge

The app was struggling to enhance in-person treatment methods, create a habit of regular use and yield true patient improvement. We found that these challenges stemmed from users’ difficulty in understanding how to execute the digitized OCD treatments on their own. Patient information logged using NOCD between therapy sessions could not be used by the medical community due to HIPAA Compliance. As a result, patients missed the benefit of combining live therapy with NOCD’s treatments and data-driven health plan.

Solution

After multiple iterations, prototypes and rounds of user testing, we were able to successfully pair evidence-based ERP treatments with a technology-enabled user experience; unlocking the ability for users to easily log complex interactions and create a data-driven health plan. We updated the app’s frontend and backend architecture to be HIPAA compliant. This allowed patients using the app to share results with doctors, who were then able to make objective, data-driven inferences about the best steps to create positive patient outcomes.
